The trip back to Delhi could be described in many words. I'll choose just one...long.
But the girls and Caden settled into the hotel room, ordered up some room service and a bottle of wine and had a quiet night chatting before settling into bed. Dad and Wade opted to head out on the town - to a nearby sports bar to catch the cricket match and a couple Kingfisher beers. They had fun and cheered on the Indian team whenever everyone else in the bar did. Everyone got a good night's sleep before heading out for our tour of Delhi. Wade and I reminisced a little on having a real mattress again (you'll recall our beds have the give of a quarter inch of cardboard over a lumpy sheet metal table).
Caden was excited for his day...as we all departed the hotel in our Tempo Traveller.
Our first stop was Red Fort, an impressive structure also built by Shah Jahan (builder of the Taj Mahal) and twice the size of Agra Fort. Before leaving our first stop, Caden hitches a ride on Grandpa in a foreshadowing of his preferred mode of viewing Delhi.Leaving Red Fort, Caden transitions to his Grandma...Our second stop was a mosque in old Delhi. We opted to view the mosque from the outside, but got to see a good view of the markets and bustle of old Delhi. Caden briefly demonstrates a spurt of self-propelled energy when faced with the challenge of stairs.
We also stopped at Raj Ghat and the monument to Mahatma Gandhi. It was a very serene place and a moving memorial. Caden took it all in from Wade's shoulders.A brief stop past India Gate, a monument to World War I soldiers. Our final stop in Delhi was the Qutab Minar complex, an 8th century monument and the oldest landmark in Delhi. Our tour guide suggested a local restaurant for lunch, and when we pulled up to an unimpressive place loaded with hawkers and tour busses, I suggested we head to Spice Route, an extremely impressive restaurant in the Imperial Hotel. Katie felt more at home the minute she saw the Chanel shop and we all enjoyed the ambiance and air conditioning at the end of a full day of touring. And from there, we all headed back to Bangalore together. On Caden's 21st flight before turning four, he boarded, stopped in front of me a few rows in and demanded to know why we had to sit in back. Really, the kid knows how to travel in style. I'm not sure this is a good thing, but I feel very blessed. Our trip to Bangalore was uneventful and it was a great first weekend together.
